Asian Heritage Month

At the Social Workers Association of Alberta (SWAA), we are excited to celebrate Asian Heritage Month—a time dedicated to honoring the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions from Asian communities worldwide. In Canada, the theme for this year is “Preserving the Past, Embracing the Future: Amplifying Asian Canadian Legacy” (Government of Canada, 2024). This theme not only underscores the importance of honoring the historical contributions of Asian Canadians but also emphasizes the significance of looking forward with hope, unity, and inclusivity.

Throughout history, Asian individuals and communities have made indelible marks on society, from art and literature to science, technology, and beyond. Their contributions have played a pivotal role in shaping Canada as we know it today. From the early Chinese immigrants who labored tirelessly to build the transcontinental railway, to the Japanese Canadians interned during World War II, and Filipino immigrants who filled gaps in the Canadian labour market, Asian Canadians have left a profound impact on our nation's development. The legacy spans to today in Alberta, where Asian Canadians continue to contribute immensely to the cultural richness in our local communities.

Their stories of resilience, perseverance, and innovation resonate deeply, inspiring us to recognize not only their contributions, but also their challenges, and struggles. Our history includes discriminatory head tax and exclusionary immigration policies, and today communities still face discrimination and xenophobia in everyday life. At SWAA, we are committed to advocacy, allyship, and the pursuit of justice, standing shoulder to shoulder with our Asian colleagues, clients, and communities in solidarity and support.

Together, let's champion diversity, equity, and inclusion, not only this month but every day, fostering environments where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
