SWAA wants to make sure members are aware of an important opportunity to provide feedback on proposed changes to the ACSW Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
The Alberta College of Social Workers is currently reviewing both documents in response to Bill 13, the Regulated Professions Neutrality Act (RPNA). ACSW has indicated that this is not a comprehensive review of the Code or Standards, but is focused specifically on identifying areas that may need to be amended to comply with the legislation.
The ACSW Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice feedback survey closes October 8.
We encourage members to take some time to review the proposed changes and share their perspectives. The Code and Standards help shape professional expectations for social workers in Alberta, and this is an important opportunity to contribute directly to that process.
As you review the draft, you may want to consider:
- How well do the proposed changes reflect social work values and professional identity?
- What might the changes mean for social justice, anti-oppressive practice and culturally responsive social work?
-
Is the distinction between personal expression and conduct connected to a professional role clear?
- Are there areas where the proposed wording could create uncertainty in practice?
- Is there anything you believe needs additional clarity or consideration?
These questions are not intended to suggest a particular response. Social workers will bring different perspectives to the proposed changes, and we encourage members to review the materials themselves and provide feedback based on their own professional experience and perspective.
You can review ACSW’s Bill 13 information, the proposed Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, and complete the feedback survey here:
If you have not yet participated, we encourage you to take the opportunity to have your voice heard before the survey closes. You can also track the time used as professional engagement hours.
Warm regards,
SWAA Team
