Event Description:

June marks an important time to honour the histories, resilience, and ongoing struggles for justice of 2SLGBTQ+ communities. In recognition of this month of reflection, advocacy, and solidarity, the Social Workers Association of Alberta (SWAA) invites you to an engaging and timely webinar on 2SLGBTQ+ Allyship.

Allyship links purposeful association with social action and social justice. This presentation offers insights into allyship from a social work perspective, not just involving LGBTQ2S+ communities, but all underrepresented and oppressed groups.”

Presenter Bio:

Scott Stewart, MSW, RSW, is a member of the LGBTQ2S+ community and a registered social worker with over 25 years of experience in various settings. Scott has a passion for teaching and is an experienced seminar and workshop presenter on a variety of topics, including bringing a better understanding of LGBTQ2S+ clients and communities.

SYNOPSIS

It was the Studio 54 of the Prairies, a venue that owner John Reid vowed would be a safe place for ‘gay people and their friends.’ Flashback is the story of a defiant disco dance culture of sweat and sex and drugs and fashion. Located in a conservative northern Canadian city often hostile to queer people, Flashback became a sensation on the international club circuit despite police raids, threats of violence and the scourge of AIDS. Flashback is a ghost. But it comes alive again in the memories of the people who were there and the legends they left behind.

THE FILM

More than 30 interviews tell the Flashback story in a compelling and inclusive way, in tribute to a place where young people could just be themselves.

A soundtrack with two new disco recordings, 3D graphics, and archival photographs and footage takes us back inside the famous venue and blends with re-enactments shot with today’s club kids in Edmonton’s last remaining gay bar.

All this is framed by the rediscovery, restoration and resurrection of the club's iconic neon sign. The blue glow of the old Flashback sign now shines from a wall of the Neon Sign Museum in Edmonton, and its journey to restored glory is documented in the film.

Meet the Producers Behind Flashback

Brothers Matthew and Peter Hays spent their early years dancing at Flashback, the iconic nightclub featured in their documentary. Since then, Peter has built a career in journalism and film, founding Tangerine Productions Ltd. to tell stories of resilience and overcoming discrimination. Matthew, a longtime journalist and advocate in 2SLGBTQ+ media, now teaches at Concordia University. Their shared journey makes Flashback a deeply personal film.
